Glyn Austin's Fishing Report - Thanks for the Awesome report!

The fishing has been good the last week around Sebastian. The Trout bite has improved on soft plastics and topwater baits such as the Hall Em In Lures B29. The inshore Reds bite has picked up a little also on topwater or Trigger X soft plastic baits. Glass Minnows are starting to show up in the river with Tarpon around the schools of Glass Minnows. Bluefish & Jacks are following the schools of Mullet and are caught on topwater, suspending baits and soft plastics.
The Big Reds are still in the inlet and the snook bite is getting better with live bait the best bet. We are also catching big Jacks and big Bluefish while fishing for the Snook & Reds.

The cold water has pushed the kings, in to the beach and we are getting them in 15ft of water on Greenies, Sardines & Bluerunners. We are also getting a some Bonito, Sharks and some Barracuda around the bait pods. There are also plenty of whiting and silver trout on the bottom near the beaches and we are catching them on frozen shrimp or pieces of cut
TriggerX and Gulp baits. Dolphin are being caught in the 90-120ft range
and there are some Sailfish in the same areas.

Lesley, did he like the lures? Thanks Dave Hall

Absolutely!!!  He was so touched that I found something out of exotic wood that was different from anything else he had.  I owned up and explained that I had cheated -- found the idea from a Garden & Gun email!  But he loved them and wants to put the three big exotics in a shadow box -- which we will hang in our dining room -- on our walls of pecky cypress!  He will use the two small ones fishing for trout -- as anticipated...!

Thanks so much for the follow-up -- beautiful work -- you and your father should be so proud!

Sincerely,
Lesley Giancola

Thanks Bill!

Wow, the lures are absolutely incredible! So much so that I am going to put in another order right away so I can give some away to fishing friends. Can you use the credit card info I provided you for my last order? Also it seems as if there was an extra lure in the box. Not sure if that was intended or not but I will definitely pay for it if not.

I would like four rippers in the 3.5” size…one Black Bart, and I was hoping you could do a few custom color combos for the others…one Black back into green sides into white belly and orange throat, and one Black back into copper sides into white belly and orange throat, and one Black back, purple sides, white belly and red throat.

I would also like four more 3.5” B-29s with tail spinners. One Black Bart, one Red Lady, and two customs…Black back, green sides, white belly, orange throat and Black back copper sides white belly orange throat.

In addition I would like four of the 3.5” Wigglers…Tequila Gold, Black Bart, and two customs…Black back, green sides, white belly, orange throat and black back, purple sides, white belly, red throat.

Again, I could not be more pleased…these are the nicest custom lures I have seen. Period. Any chance you could make a replica of the old Creek Chub Darter?

Thanks
Bill

Thanks for the feedback Billy..

Thank you for the follow up on my order. I received your voicemail yesterday and just forgot to return your call. Everything was as expected with the order and I feel sure I will be ordering more soon. A personal call following up on an order is pretty much unheard of these days and really appreciated. The personal touch is a big plus in customer service.

My dad thought the lures were great and will be showing them to some friends so maybe it will send some business your way. These are mostly bass fishing guy's but I think some of your lures will work for them pretty well!

Thanks again.

Tarpon are in the river and on the beaches and headed north. We ran
into several schools of Tarpon from the inlet to Melbourne Beach. The
fish were moving north and they were tough to get them to eat
anything. Saturday we managed to jump 2 fish around 70lbs. We also saw
a good number of fish in the 30-60lb range in the Indian River Lagoon
north of the inlet and in the Sebastian River. Best baits are live
pogies or mullet.

There are big Snook on the flats around the inlet and around the spoil
islands north and south of the inlet. Best baits are topwaters &
subsurface baits early in the morning and live bait later in the day.
Reds & Trout have been mixed in the mullet schools on the flats also
with best baits being live mullet, pinfish and croakers. We have also
been getting a fair number of Trout on the bone colored Ripper and Peanuts.

Bait is thick outside the inlet with a lot of Sharks, Jacks, Mackerel
and Tarpon mixed in. We have been fishing the bait pods using swim
baits and the Ripper catching a lot of big Jacks, Spanish and Cero
Mackeral. Good numbers of Cobia are also being caught on the bait pods
south and north of the inlet in 40' of water.

Awesom report Tony, WOW, Nice Gator.....

May can be some of the hottest inshore plugging and artificial action of the year! All pelagic fish have showed up and are eager to eat a bait. Early AM topwater can produce a big Trophy Trout and Redfish, or just plugging bait filled moving water all day can have great results with Cobia, Jack Crevales, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, and even the elusive Tarpon. Any one of your favorite plugs will work, however pick the one you have confidence in and know to use it! For Cobia, give me a call for your custom Cobia jigs. Clear water use a natural color and stained or dirty water use white or chartreuse. For a look at some newer effective and strong plugs go to www.halleminlures.com. Grass lines at high water can have great results as well. Bait fish like mullet, shrimp, pogies, and other baits local to North Fla. will be moving inshore and taking their summer residence in the St. Johns River and other surrounding areas. Look for moving incoming or outgoing water like rips and through lures up current and bring them back in a natural fastion or drift baits back through areas for best results. Low light conditions can be best with both. Sea walls will hold big Jacks, use a strong topwater plug and throw horizontally up current, they will crush it if they are there. Spanish Mackerel love a trolled double 00 Clark spoon. Run this spoon 30 inches behind a small trolling lead with High Seas Fluorocarbon for the most hook ups. These feisty fish will hit plugs and jigs along with Bluefish. Flounder are making a presentation and they will be in area inlets as well as grass lines and same exiting areas as Redfish and Trout. A top producer is a TBS jig with a mud minnow / finger mullet on a flourocarbon leader fished slow. If you feel the take give 15 - 20 seconds and set the hook hard and have a net ready. Tight Lines.....

Dave-Fished the wrecks the other day with a father and sonwith some pretty rough waters. The Permit and cobia were plentiful and well schooled up around the wrecks. The clients landed a 28 pound Permit on saturday and a 44 pound cobia on Sunday.Just wanted to drop some pictures by and give you a report.   Thanks,Capt. Jim Stoner

Mr Hall,

All of your lures look great along with your website.  I am truly honored to have won your drawing but would like to leave the selection up to you.  To help you decide I primarily fish from my kayak or the beach and target drum and trout in the banana river.  However, on occasion I have tried for dolphin when taking a break from patrolling in the ocean.  If you can send a recommended lure that would be great.

It was a pleasure seeing your handiwork at the show.

Hey David!

This is Sierra, I met you at the Ft. Myers FS show with my boyfriend, Capt. Justin Parker. We wanted to give you an update on how your top water plugs worked. We went out on Valentines Day to a nice sandbar off Captiva Island. We have caught plenty of Reds there and figured it was the perfect place to try out the lures you sent us with. Justin had on one of the bigger plugs and I had one of the small peanuts. First couple casts Justin had a few fish charge up on the lure, swat at it and miss. Then I got mine in the water and was trying to work in the same area. I had another group of fish mess with mine and then on my second cast with the peanut, had a very nice red destroy it! I had really light liter on so I was trying to work him in really slowly. The water was so clear I could see him from a ways away and saw that he was a nice fish. I finally got him with in a couple feet of the boat and he broke me off…. peanut and all!!! Needless to say I was upset for losing the first fish of the day and that awesome little lure! Justin didn’t bring the other one we got from you on the boat that day so I put on one of the bigger plugs and unfortunately neither one of got any more hits from reds on them. We got a ton of big trout once we jumped out of the boat and started to wade. I wanted to attach a picture of one of the trout with your lure in its mouth but Im not sure how to do that on this message board. Is there an actual email address I can send pics to? I landed a smaller red later on a jig, but man I wish I would have landed the first one! I guess it just worked too good! Let me know how you want me to send you pictures and we will send you the ones from yesterday and the next time we go out!

Thanks again and take care!

David; I only ordered 3, but got 5 instead....am I free to gift one or two of them?

I think they are beautiful, but I am not going to try to eat them;

that's for the fish ....I'm saving them for my trip to SW Florida next

month!  I will let you know...

And let me know if I should return the two I did not buy.

Thanks.

Mike

Yes I did. Sorry for not responding sooner. I appreciate the lures and used one this Sunday. I believe it was a "chugger" style topwater, grey and black in color. It took a little to get a technique down (and I didn't perfect it yet), but I really liked the lure. I was fishing a pod of snook and they were very spooky, but I got a nice strike from a big snook but she seemed to hit it at the end and I didn't get a solid hook set. I don't want to write a report on the lures until I catch some fish on them, which I know I will. I will test out any lures you want tested, if not, the two I have are fine. Maybe we can do some fishing next time you are in the area. Send me an email back.

Thanks! Brad Leber

Dave,

What have you done? Aren't you the best. I received a package a few minutes ago with FOUR plugs in it!!!!

It's blowin' a gale up here now with rain coming. Tomorrow, I'm going to throw ONE in the water and give it a test. I'll let you know everything. Wednesday, I'll get those other plugs back to you!!!

You are a really a classy guy . . . which probably speaks volumes about your work . . . . that was really just awesome.

Paul

My favorite Hall Em In lure is a rather slim Ripper which is light blue in color on the top.  I have caught trout up to 22 inches on it in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon.  I find it to be an excellent subsurface lure.  Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,

Jim H

Dave

Thanks for the lures,I will settle up with you when you come back down. I put one on and cast it in the marina, first cast a big snook came out from under the dock and slamed it. Almost lost the lure on the first cast. Great lure!

Thanks , Bruce
Capt.Bruce Hitchcock is a friend of ours who had ordered some of our lures from a copy of a lure that was produced back in the mid 1980's and are no longer made.Wooden lures are becoming more rare and are very cost prohibited for mass marketed companies to produce.Once mastered these wooden lures offer an unsurpassed action from mass produced plastics. Also I would like to add I have never seen anyone work this particular lure as well as Capt. Bruce.Anyways,on with the story,we came in the Parkway Marina down in Chokoloskee after a non productive morning.Well Bruce was there doing some mantinence on his boat and I asked #1,if the email he had wrote me was true and #2 if he really like the action on the lures. He stopped what he was doing and grabbed his rig that was set up for Tarpon and said,I will show you.It is so rewarding to see someone that can take something you made and use it far beyond your expectations. The first cast it was truely amazing to watch. He worked it VERY slow and it tracked perfectly. The second cast we were talking about the action and variations between wood and plastics and WHAM!,it was like a gun when off.So I reached down in my dry bag and pulled out the camera and videoed the rest.We hope you enjoy watching!!!

Hey Dave,

Cap Justin parker here got out the other morning for a few hours before the wind killed the day managed one nice red and some small snook with the copper peanut . Here are a few pictures of the red we toke . I will give you a call and talk some. Thanx for everything Dave I love the lures and can't wait till our summer patterns kick in .

Thanks,Capt JT Parker

Hey Dave,

It's Justin we have been good we have had some really bad wind down here we got out last week and threw the plugs for about 2 hours in the am before the wind got way to hard. We only managed a few big trout but we were lucky to even get those because the flats and bays were blown out. We were throwing the rat dog and ripper the flew great in the nasty wind even right into the wind they still went a mile .I have a few pictures we toke of the trout so I will send them. I hope the weather clears soon. The tarpon have started to move in and when the weather clears I will be out there trying to jump a few with the lures. The wind has been unbelievable the last two weeks it has not stopped blowing.  Well I am glad you wrote gonna try to get out this weekend but they are still calling for strong winds .

Capt JT Parker
